We could soon be hearing a lot more of teenaged batter Will Luxton, who made his first-team debut during the 2021 season.
A Keighley-born, Bradford Grammar School educated right-hander, Luxton turns 19 during the opening couple of months of the 2022 summer.
He was Yorkshire’s Academy captain in 2021 before representing the England Under 19s en-route to the World Cup final in the Caribbean in the early stages of 2022.
Luxton played seven times for Yorkshire’s first-team in the Royal London Cup in 2021, scoring 165 runs in six innings.
His standout innings came on debut against Northamptonshire at Scarborough in late July, a match that eventually ended up as a rain soaked No Result.
The Vikings fell to 69-6 batting first, only for Luxton to lead the recovery from number seven in the order with a superb 68. It was no surprise to see him elevated up the order shortly afterwards, with him ending the competition batting at three.
A classy player with plenty of power, Luxton’s game looks well suited to both first-class and limited overs cricket.
He is tall and wiry and is also an outstanding fielder.
Luxton first represented Yorkshire at Under 15s level in 2018, posting scores of 99 and 94 in his first five appearances – opening the batting at the time.
He first represented the Academy in 2019 and the second team in 2020, also playing for the Yorkshire Under 17s along the way.
Luxton captained the Yorkshire Academy in 2021 and scored a YPL North century against Sheriff Hutton Bridge at Weetwood. He was batting at number three.
Having made his England Under 19s debut against the West Indies in September 2021, he scored two centuries in back-to-back Under 19s intra-squad games to end the home summer.
That was in preparation for a winter tour to Sri Lanka pre-Christmas and then the World Cup, where England lost a low-scoring final to India.
2022 promises to be a big year for one of the county’s brightest batting talents, who is on a rookie contract at Headingley.
