Leading by 58 overnight Lavelle and Bell extended this to 71 before the former became the first of Matthew Waites two quick victims – he was caught at the wicket for 162 made from 283 deliveries. Bell followed three runs later trapped lbw, he had made 81 from 170 balls.

Mahmood and Hartley added 48 in 81 balls before James Wharton claimed his maiden wicket having Hartley caught behind for 25 and lunch was taken with Lancashire 401-5, a lead of 142.

Post lunch a flurry of wickets had our visitors 426-8 courtesy of a second Wharton victim, a third for Waite and another for Cliff. The two new batters, Morley and Johnson, however, advanced the score to 486-8 a partnership of 60 in 100 balls before bad light halted play and an early tea was taken – Morley unbeaten on 45 from 62 balls.

Rain and more bad light halted the resumption until 4.25pm with two overs being lost. Lancashire declared 486-8, a lead of 227.

A heavy downpour arrived shortly after with Yorkshire 9 without loss from 3 overs. The rain eased but play was further delayed following lightning in the area and play was abandoned for the day at 6.08pm with further rain falling.
